Josef and Machle Dachis.........a Search story:
I started with what I knew: Joe Dock and Mollie Margolis. She was the boss’s daughter and that they were carpenters. Also known was that they were married on Valentine’s Day. His family names are unknown and her family names unknown at this time.
From Mollies Death certificate we know that her mother’s name was Sara and her father’s name was Chaiyam.
Using Jewish Gen I found an entry for a Registered voter in the Kiev Oblast by the name of Iosev Dajck. He had family members in Stetls that was outside the Oblast.
Michele using Ancestry was able to access the naturalization papers of a Josef Dockes (wife Mollie, sons Max born 1911 and Sam 1908) the first page of the paper work is dated for 1913 and the last pages is dated for 1921. One of the middle pages was a Change of Name form. Joe Dockes then changed his name to Dake. (this is important because it influenced future searches as well as it shows a habit. Joe Dock must have changed his name about 5 times in his life). When this document was discovered I at first then discounted the listing for Iosev Dajack. The informational page of this document also lists that they are from the village of Zguritza Russia (its now in Moldova on the Dnieper River).
The Naturalization papers for Joe Dockes (now Dake) listed that he arrived into the port of Baltimore on the ship called “Main” out of Bremen Germany. I spent some time hunting that document down and I did find it. It lists a Josef Daches, Joiner, wife Machle` (not on board) and his sponsor was a cousin Lipe Schendlinger of 1234 North 7th street of Philadelphia.
Armed with a new name I started an immigrant search for Machle` Dachis (accent on her last letter). I found her arriving on the La Touraine out of Havre. She lists her birth village as “guritza” which is how Zguritza sound like to pronounce. She listed next of kin as Aron Kitrozer of Zguritza and she travelled with a child Mordche (birth year of 1911 so this child is Max). He is the only child listed. She was met by Joe Daches listed as her husband. The ships officer noted the name spelling difference on a side note. Aaron Kitrozer of Zguritza moved to Jerusalem. He changed his name to Kitrossy. His family reside in Israel to this day.
Josef Dockes/Dachis/Daches/Dake used the steamship company’s bank to make payments and arrange for the family's tickets. A notation of that is included. Please note she arrived about 2 weeks before their naturalization papers were finalized. From this entry we know that Joe changed the spelling of his name from Dachis to Daches to Docke to Dake. Question is Why?? Could be his political affiliations? Jeff told me he was very political …which made me think once again about Iosev Dajck of Fastov who was a registered voter (meaning political)
Next question is ‘Where is Sam”? He would have been older about age 12 at this time. He could have remained to come with another relative. This might be answered from a memory that Michele had. Michele remembered a cousin or a family relative by the name of Ralph Kushner. Indeed I also remembered that name, but I couldn’t place where I heard it before. Kushner was shortened from its original name of Raphuel Kushirinzen of Zguritza, Russia. I found his naturalization petition/name change documents. He was a carpenter. His naturalization papers state his residence at the Dock’s Marshall Street address (naturalization front sheet is included in the collection). His ship of immigration is listed as the USS Asia and an arrival date of 1925. However the Asia did not register any trips after 1924. His name does not pop up at all under the Ellis Island search engine. It is possible that he brought the child that didn’t come with Mollie with him. Ralph married Ruth Ultz who was one of his sponsors (and his boss) daughter and they had a son named Max (probably named for the lost son of the Dock family and its probably a family name ). Besides residing at the Marshall Street address when he first arrived, he also stayed at the Schinedlinger’s address on 7th street. He later moved to 7th street once he married his wife Ruth.
Because he arrived between 1923 and 1925 and that he stayed at the Marshall street address,( I think he lied on the immigration papers/oath of allegiance/name change) , I think he might have brought Sam Dock with him when he came over. Ralph’s son Max is still living in Boca Raton Florida and is in ill health. I spoke with his wife she said she would try and ask him a few questions and if he could remember she would contact me about it. From her voice, his health was really bad, and I don’t think she will be calling anytime soon.
In searches I have done under the name of Joe Dake, I have found his WW2 registration papers (wife Mollie and at the Marshall street address) and a 1950 telephone book entry for a Jos. Dake of Marshall street.
On the Census records, the recorder listed the family name as Dock. After I had gathered all these documents, someone in the Jewish Gen Forums sent me a link to a birth record for a Josef Juda Daches. The parents names are not listed.
Josef Juda Daches was born in Nesterov. At some time he moved to Fastov in the Kiev Oblast where he was a registered voter under the name of Iosev Dajck described as working in the lumber industry. He later moved to the new stetl that was founded under a grant from the government called Zguritsa in the area that is now called Moldova. The settlement was founded in the early 1850’s.

Zguritsa was an agricultural Jewish settlement that
was famous for its apples and vinyards. (see the Wikipedia note I added to the
record) Also from Zguritza were :
- Yenta Mash, Yiddish writer
- Pedro and Mauricio Sprinberg, Yiddish journalists
The Jewish school building was transformed to another
function, and the cemetery is in ruins.
The Peace Corp went thru there about a year ago and the Mormons have a
mission in Zguritza itself. Both
organizations took pictures of the town and the cemetery. I have those pictures on my computer as it’s
the last Jewish record of that town, and a valuable piece of Jewish history.
Everyone in the family has said that Machle` Docks maiden name was Margolis. It is on her death certificate. It also names her father as Chaim Margolis and her mother was Sara. (Informant Joe Dock)
ReplyDeleteHowever THAT being said............If we go to the ships manifest of her arrival she listed her next of kin as Aron Kitrozer, Brother, Zguritsa, Husband Joe Dock of Philadelphia. It has been mentioned that Sarah's name might have been Kitrozer prior to Marriage to Chaim. No documented proof exists at this time. Further research needs to be ongoing as further records of names of those who were lost in the Shoah are made available. Aron Kitrozer is listed as a carpenter as is Joe Dock as is Ralph Kusher ...family stories state that Chaim was a carpenter or a contractor.
How does KITROZER fit? Was Sara married before she married Chaim and was Aron Kitrozer her child from a previous marriage? We know from the database that Aron Kitrozer Married Motl Nudelman so he cannot be a brother in law.......
Mahle` (Mollie) Margolis Dachis came over with Mordache (Max) who died once he got here but she didnt bring the baby Shimmen (Sam) who came later.
Everyone in the family recognized that Ralph Kushnir was a cousin. Ralph came over with Shimmen (Sam Dock). Ralph stayed wth the family a year at their Philadelphia residence. He was a carpenter from Zguritsa. Ralph's immigration papers show that he changed his name from Kusnirinzon to Kushner.
We have not as yet been able to find the ships manifest for Ralph. Ralphs Mother was Bella Margolis, sister to Chaim. Bella Married Ducho (David) Cusnirinzon and had several children...Of which one was Ralph.
Raph was the only one who came to America that we can tell. Ralphs siblings settled in Italy, Malta and the British Isles (Scotland and Wales).
The siblings that ended up in the UK came on an "Onion" Boat. Unscrupulous ship captains would take immigrants who didnt know English onto their boats on the pretext of taking them to America......they took their money etc and then when they got to England would dump them off. Having no money to go further there were naturalized into the United Kingdom. The Family lines got separated, one became the Cusnirinzon family of Wales another became the Kushner's of Philadelphia .......and this line moved further south as Ralph was trying to distance himself from Joe Docks political beliefs.
Ralph Kushner married, Had a son named Max (named after young Max/Mordache Dock who died). Max was very old and dying when I made contact with him. His wife didnt want to speak. Whatever family knowledge he had was now lost for all time. I got Max's contact information from a young man named Adam Cusnirinzon of Wales. He was the the one who knew the connection of Bela to Chaim....and He knew that he had an gr-Uncle named Max Kushner son of Ralph....so I am relatively sure that all these names fit where they are supposed tp.....and supposidly his great Aunt Miriam used to correspond with someone over here in the family ( We have family stories of Aunt Sarah corresponding with family members overseas somewhere)
Aron Kitrozer is recorded in the Central Database of Shoah Victims as having died in 1941 along with his wife Motl Nudelman. Testimony given by Sara Kigelman a child or grandchild of Aron Kitrozer.
Other notes...I have seen some testimony that Aron Kitrozer and his family managed to escape to Israel . The story of Aron Kitrozer (Name was changed to Kitrosski in Italy) was posted by his grandson online a few years ago but currently the website has died.
